South Dakota single-trip oversize permit fee
$25 + $0.02/ton-mile
That is the general South Dakota single-trip oversize/overweight permit rate. The total depends on the route. We do not calculate routes. We publish what the state publishes.
Official handbook: “Single-Trip permits may be purchased individually or in books of ten for $25 per permit. If the vehicle exceeds 40,000 pounds on two axles, 60,000 pounds on three axles, 80,000 pounds on four axles, 85,000 pounds on five axles, 90,000 pounds on six axles, and 95,000 or more pounds on seven or more axles, an additional overweight fee is charged at a rate of two cents per ton-mile for the excess weight.”
| Axles | Overweight starts above |
|---|---|
| 2 | 40,000 lb |
| 3 | 60,000 lb |
| 4 | 80,000 lb |
| 5 | 85,000 lb |
| 6 | 90,000 lb |
| 7 or more | 95,000 lb |
Example, not a quote: 100 assumed miles at the printed $0.02 per ton-mile on 20 excess tons is $25 + $40.00 = $65.00. The desk runs its own miles. We do not take origin or destination.
